Good News: Accredited Practitioner Journey – Fiona K. Mackay

Fiona K. Mackay’s journey with FREEDOM Wellbeing Institute and NZCDI reflects a lifelong commitment to healing, empowerment, and supporting people through trauma-informed and holistic wellbeing approaches.

With more than 20 years of professional experience across therapy, education, movement practice, and community wellbeing, Fiona has dedicated her work to helping individuals reconnect with their strengths, self-expression, and personal potential.

Through her practice, Finding Balance Counselling Services, Fiona supports clients across New Zealand and the United States, including individuals navigating trauma recovery, ACC Sensitive Claims processes, neurodivergence, and members of the Rainbow Community.

Her professional background combines creative arts therapy, counselling, somatic approaches, and evidence-based wellbeing practices. Trained in Dance/Movement Therapy in the United States and Psychosynthesis Counselling in New Zealand, Fiona integrates a wide range of therapeutic modalities including Somatic Psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, Non-Violent Communication, Sand-tray work, and creative arts therapies to support long-term healing and wellbeing outcomes.

Alongside her therapeutic work, Fiona has remained deeply involved in community wellbeing and personal development initiatives. She previously taught tai chi for 15 years, volunteers as a facilitator for the Women of Worth programme, and serves on the Psychosynthesis South Pacific Board of Trustees, helping foster opportunities for personal growth, experiential learning, and community connection.

As part of her continued professional development journey, Fiona became an Accredited Universal Wellbeing Evaluation Facilitator through FREEDOM Wellbeing Institute and New Zealand Curriculum Design Institute.

This accreditation supports practitioners to apply evidence-based Universal Wellbeing evaluation frameworks within professional practice to better understand wellbeing conditions, identify underlying contributing factors, and support meaningful long-term change.

Fiona’s journey reflects the wider purpose behind Universal Wellbeing professional accreditation pathways — supporting experienced practitioners, therapists, educators, and wellbeing leaders to strengthen their practice through research-based frameworks and prevention-focused approaches.
